At the time, my relationship was struggling, but I held onto it because of my children. Growing up, I internalized the belief that I couldn’t let my son grow up with separated parents. My bonus daughter, whose mother has been absent from her life, added another layer of complexity. She was only nine years old when I started to realize my relationship with her father wasn’t working.
